Research perspectives on the health impacts of climate change. Researchers from EXHAUSTION contributed at High level conference, organised by DG Research & Innovation of the European Commission.

This week CICERO researchers working on #climatechange & #health had interesting & inspiring days taking part in the #EUClimateAndHealth conference in Brussels. The aim of the conference was to highlight state of the art & knowledge needs as input to the European Commission roadmap for a #research agenda on climate change & health. A key message from the conference was that more inter- and transdisciplinary research is needed. It was therefore interesting to learn that we were among only few #climatescientists present at the conference, the majority of participants coming from health.

At the conference Kristin Aunan had a plenary presentation on the interlinkages between ambient #heat & #airpollution and associated health risks showcasing results from EXHAUSTION. See more in the White Paper from the project.

Sourangsu Chowdhury presented a poster on the impacts of #fires on human health in Europe together with Mikhail Sofiev from the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Iulia Marginean presented her research & new tools for quantifying vulnerability to #heatstress in cities with a case study from #Madrid from the EmCliC project.

Both ENBEL & EXHAUSTION participated actively in the conference with project members presenting research & outcomes from the projects and engaging in discussions. Our many films were also showcased and other projects in our network were also presenting.

Antonio Gasparrini & Pierre Masselot from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London presented research from EXHAUSTION on changes in heat and cold-related mortality in Europe under climate change in a parallel session and with a poster.

Sari Kovats London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London shared insights from ENBEL work on stakeholder mapping in Europe and Africa highlighting e.g. that health is missing in #adaptation, the need for breaking down silos & evaluation of what works. Tilly Alcayna Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre highlighted the urgent need to ensure investment in #adaptationfinance targeting health.

ENBEL also had two posters presenting results from research synthesis on adaptation interventions & #infectiousdisease surveillance + analysis of #adaptation in East & Southern Africa.

Miriam Stackpole Dahl moderated the panel on #extremeevents & physical & #mentalhealth.

We thank everyone for great contributions!
